Outreach Activities and Collaborative Research

In addition to research by its resident scientists, the USRA/GHCC effort sponsors visits by university faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students; workshops; sabbatical and summer visits; graduate-student assistantships; and seminars. These activities seek to draw upon the broad national and international science community engaged in hydrologic cycle and climate research.

Included under the GHCC collaboration, USRA/ESSP and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) collaborate on several activities related to Earth System Science research and education.

ESSP is also collaborating with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Mississippi Department of Health, Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and NASA/MSFC to enhance a decision support tool for asthma surveillance, prediction and intervention by integrating it with NASA data and products (http://weather.msfc.nasa.gov/helix/ephtn-06.pdf and http://weather.msfc.nasa.gov/helix/poster12.pdf). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also involved in this project as a major consultant.

In addition, ESSP has joined Sinte Gleska University and eight other Tribal colleges and universities to form the TRibal Earth Science & Technology Education (TRESTE) project to promote the use of NASA Earth science data and products in the classroom thereby enabling faculty to inspire undergraduate students to careers in Earth system science, the physical sciences, and related fields of science and engineering.
